1. “It sounds good to us.”

And it probably does, you’ve been listening to it for weeks or months. At that point, you’re not hearing it objectively anymore, you’re hearing what you’ve gotten used to.

2. “We’re used to how it sounds now.”

That familiarity feels like confidence, but it often hides problems. The more you repeat something, the harder it becomes to notice what’s actually off.

3. “We don’t hear anything wrong with it.”

That doesn’t always mean it’s right. It can also mean you’ve adapted to it. Missing impact, imbalance, or lack of clarity often isn’t obvious from the inside.

4. “We compared it to other songs, and it’s close.”

“Close” usually means the gap is still there, just harder to define. Without understanding why something works, it’s easy to match surface-level things and miss what actually creates impact.

5. “We don’t want to change it too much.”

Because it feels like risking what you’ve built. But holding onto every decision can keep the song from becoming what it could be, refinement isn’t loss, it’s translation.

6. “We’ll know when it sounds right.”

But right now, that reference point is unclear. So every version feels acceptable, but nothing feels definitive. Without a clear target, “good” becomes whatever you’ve heard the most.

Not knowing what “good” sounds like isn’t about taste, it’s about perspective. When you’re too close to the music, your reference shifts without you noticing.

That’s why so many bands feel confident… until they hear the result next to everything else.
