In Norway, all lifting equipment must be marked with the date of its last inspection. This would ideally be with a label or QR code.

If it’s not possible to attach a label with required information including the name of the Enterprise of Competence and the body that certified it, then a color marking is permissible.

This color marking must correspond to the color of the year in which the equipment was inspected. It’s an easy way for equipment owners, users and inspectors to know when equipment is safe use.

There are four colors on rotation (green, blue, red and yellow) and this year’s color is yellow.

A color marking is considered the bare minimum, so those wanting better control should consider tagging lifting equipment with QR, RFID or NFC tags.
