These last 2 days in Samagaun, half of the Samdo community has come to collect mud to prepare for the future planting of 20,000 trees in the Samdo nursery this summer. Earth was filtered and then loaded on mules to be taken back to Samdo this afternoon. Congratulations to the village’s Community Forest User Group (CFUG) for their efforts in making the future green in Samdo!

In early September, Himalayan Environment and Life Protection H.E.L.P team got a call from Chekampar community (ward number 7, Upper Tsum) leaders: the horses were dying inexplicably in and around the village. In close collaboration with Tsum Nubri Municipality HELP deployed an emergency response with vet technician and staff travelling to Tsum and vaccinating 319 horses, 22 mules and 4 dogs against rabies and Tetanus and treating for deworming, as well as various injuries and illnesses. The camp was a roaring success, reaching nearly total vaccination of horses and mules in Upper Tsum, an objective beyond expectations which tightened the bonds between communities and the team in one of the most remote valleys of Nepal! May all beings be free from suffering.

As Himalayan Environment and Life Protection, H.E.L.P is committed in extending protection to all sentient beings and specifically promoting animal welfare in Nubri and Tsum.

This July, the team started veterinary activities in upper Nubri, led by new team member, vet technician Sijan Pokhrel. The team vaccinated 135 horses, 55 mules (including 9 mules from Lhi village), 22 dogs (including 3 feral dogs) and 5 cats against Tetanus and Rabies in Samagaun and Samdo. Including vaccination, Sijan treated 248 animals (dogs, cats, horses, mules and yaks) including for wounds, worm infection, eye infection, urinary track infection, diarrhea, and lameness.
Due to popular demand, the team will go to vaccinate horses, mules, dogs and cats in the lower valley this month.
May all beings be free from suffering!

This week, under Himalayan Environment and Life Protection H.E.L.P team’s lead, the Samdo community planted 2,839 trees in the wild and 31,060 trees in the village’s tree nursery situated at 3900m altitude. In the nursery, the trees were composed of local species of poplar (14,000 cuttings and 4,500 seeds) willow (12,560 cuttings); outside, a mix of poplar and willow cuttings as well as Himalayan Pine and Juniper seedlings were planted in an area where rose hip trees, thorny bushes and already existing willows were acting as natural fences to protect cuttings and seedlings from yaks, boost ecosystem regeneration and save fencing costs.

The team and community were proud for this hard work to protect the environment, make firewood and construction wood more available in the community and fight climate change in the high Himalayas!
