Another worthwhile collaboration for Up-Cycles ~

KiwiHarvest Queenstown & Central Lakes reached out to us as they have a project which requires recycled bike parts including wheel rims and handle bars with attached brake levers. (pics, media links and project description below).

Another project our veloteers can assist with, and preventing more stuff going into landfill or scrap - win/win !

“KiwiHomeHarvest is a community programme we developed to help improve household food resilience by making it easier for people to grow some of their own fresh produce at home.

Rather than simply rescuing surplus food, this programme rescues surplus materials—including pallets, bike rims, shopping trolleys, drums and other items—and transforms them into practical household growing systems. Each planter includes a built-in self-watering reservoir, frost protection, compost and starter seedlings, helping remove many of the barriers that prevent people from successfully growing food at home.

The first pilot involved more than 25 households across the region, and the response was overwhelmingly positive. Thanks to funding from the Queenstown Lakes District Council's Waste Minimisation Fund, we've now redesigned the systems and are aiming to distribute up to 100 planter packages across the district this spring.

One of the exciting features of the new designs is the increased use of reclaimed materials.”

Meet the NZVRU Trust Team | NZVRU Trust 22/07/2026

NZ Vulnerable Road User Trust

Good afternoon everyone.

At the Up-Cycles Charitable Trust we operate within a number of different cycling related arenas including advocacy for cycling safety, both on and off-road.

As such I have recently been invited to join a national advocacy group, NZ Vulnerable Road User Trust, as a trustee. Links below.

The trust is advocating for all vulnerable road users including cyclists, horse riders and pedestrians. Obviously I’m hoping to add strong advocacy for the cycling community.

If you are interested please follow the trust’s media.

For many years I developed cycle patrol programmes for the EMS.

Our award winning COBA - Community Of Bike Ambassadors initiative has evolved as a very effective educational programme, with its roots in the cycle patrol world.

So whilst in Brizzy it was nice to see how the Queensland Police Service operate and train their bike patrols.

These guys were keeping an eye on a protest in the city.
