Farmer's Moving day is coming up on Monday 1 June 2026 - King's Birthday. This will coincide with holiday traffic, so please be prepared, be patient and take care.

Each year, around June 1st, rural New Zealand quietly undergoes one of the biggest coordinated movements in the farming calendar - and most people outside the country have never heard of it.

Moving Day (historically and affectionately known as Gypsy Day, as passionately advised by our followers) is a time when share milkers, contract milkers, farm staff, and their families move to new farms ahead of the new dairy season. It’s a long-standing tradition tied closely to how the dairy industry is structured in New Zealand - and it's a big logistical undertaking involving people, animals, equipment, and entire households.

If you need to travel on rural roads around 1 June, expect that there may be cattle, large trucks or tractors on the road and leave plenty of time, so that there is no stress for you or for the farmers. Farmers are juggling multiple moving parts for their move, so please be patient.

Here is some good advice for farmers about looking after yourself from our friends at Farmstrong https://farmstrong.co.nz/managing-moving-day/ and tips and reminders from DairyNZ about Moving Day www.dairynz.co.nz/business/planning/moving-day/
