With Christmas around the corner and many businesses closing for a well deserved break, there is no time like the present to brush up on the rules and regulations regarding Annual Closures and Holiday Pay.

During a period of an “Annual Closure” at a workplace, an employer may require employees to take annual holidays during the period of the closedown, as long as they give employees 14 days notice.

If an employee is entitled to annual holidays (even if they have a zero annual holiday balance), they must stop work and take as much of their annual holidays balance as is needed to cover the closedown period.
For employees that are not entitled to annual holidays at the time of the closedown there are special provisions for these employees.
