When I came to work and live in east Auckland 20 years ago, the first person I interviewed for The Times Interview, a question-and-answer feature I introduced during my first 10-year stint at Times Media, was Morrin Cooper, the last Mayor of Howick. He was in office for 15 years – five terms from 1974 to 1989 – and as I always like to say, he retired undefeated. It’s an honour to count him as a mate. He’s a great character, has lived a very full and interesting life, and we share a great love of music. Morrin is also one of the finest orators and storytellers I know – and I’ve met a few down the years. It’s a pleasure to publish this Q&A with MT, and because he’s nearing his 90th birthday, I thought it was an idea to let everyone know so you can all wish him happy birthday in the lead-up to the big day on December 2. Respect to you, Morrin T. Cooper. You’re a good bloke. – PJ Taylor (this is the extended version)
Q&A with Morrin T. Cooper, MBE Morrin Cooper, who served as the last Mayor of Howick Borough Council from 1974 to 1989 before it became part of the former City of Manukau, will be 90 on December 2 and PJ thought we’d get in early to let everyone know! How are you feeling? Better than I felt this time last year. […]
