Google Search Console just got a major upgrade. And most SEOs are ignoring an urgent data problem hiding inside it.
Here are 5 things you need to do in GSC right now before it's too late:
1. Export your historical data immediately
GSC only keeps 16 months of data.
That means your pre-AI Overviews baseline from late 2023 and early 2024 is disappearing right now.
Without it, you can't measure the real impact AI Overviews had on your traffic.
- Go to Performance > Search Results
- Set the date range as far back as possible
- Export everything to a spreadsheet
Do this today. Once it's gone, it's gone.
2. Set up the new branded vs. non-branded filter
Google just rolled this out to all eligible sites.
It automatically separates queries into branded (people searching your name) and non-branded (people discovering you).
- Branded growing, non-branded flat = your content strategy needs work
- Non-branded growing, branded flat = you're attracting traffic but not building a brand
- Both growing = you're winning
Check the lists Google creates. Some brands get misclassified. Verify before making decisions.
3. Use the new AI-powered query feature
You can now type natural language prompts directly into GSC.
Instead of clicking through filters manually, type:
"Show me mobile queries with high impressions but low CTR in the last 28 days"
GSC builds the report automatically.
Use this to find quick wins: pages ranking on page 1 with low CTR are your biggest opportunities.
Fix the title, improve the meta description, and watch clicks climb.
4. Track your AI Overview exposure
33% of links in AI Overviews come from the top 10 organic results.
But 47% come from pages ranking 50th or lower.
That means pages you've written off as "not ranking well enough" might actually be getting cited by AI.
- Check which of your pages appear in AI Overviews using Ahrefs or Semrush
- Cross-reference with your GSC data to see if AI citations drive impressions
- Prioritize updating those pages with fresh stats and better structure
- Build a quarterly audit routine
Google's algorithm changes 12+ times per day now. Set reminders for Jan 1, Apr 1, Jul 1, Oct 1.
On audit day:
- Pull a GSC comparison report (current vs. 3 months ago)
- Flag any keywords that dropped off page 1
- Check if search intent shifted (are different content types ranking now?)
- Re-optimize dropped pages with fresh data and updated structure
The SEOs who treat GSC as a daily tool will outperform everyone still checking it once a month.
