FORGIVENESS - what does this mean for you?
This is a deeply personal and multifaceted concept. It means releasing feelings of anger, resentment, disappointment towards someone who has wronged you. It involves letting go of the desire for retribution and choosing to move forward with compassion and understanding for the sake of the other person and mostly for your own peace of mind.
Achieving forgiveness is often marked by a sense of peace and emotional freedom. You may find you don't dwell on hurtful actions or feelings associated with the person who harmed you. Instead you may feel a sense of closure and acceptance.
Forgiving someone who has hurt you is a challenging process that requires focus and intentional effort, self-reflection and self acknowledgement.
Here are some ways that I help my clients work through forgiveness.
1. Acknowledge Your Pain: Allow yourself to feel and process the emotions that come from the experience - denying your feelings can hinder your healing.
2. Acknowledge And Understand The Others Perspective: Try to empathise with the person who hurt you, try to understand their perspective and circumstances. This does not mean you excuse their behaviour, or forget what they have done, however it can help you understand why they did what they did, the understanding is key.
3. Letting Go of Resentment: Holding onto feelings of resentment only prolongs your suffering. Making a conscious decision to release negative emotions and replace them with positive ones such as understanding or compassion.
4. Practice Self Compassion: Be gentle with yourself as you work through forgiveness. It is ok to feel hurt or angry and you should give yourself the time to work through the pain that you feel, moving towards healing.
5. Communicate If Necessary: If it feels safe and appropriate to do so you may choose to communicate with the person who has hurt you. Expressing your feelings and seeking closure can be a valuable part of the forgiveness process, it is not always necessary or appropriate to do so in every situation
6. Focus on The Present: Instead of focusing on the past hurt focus on the present moment and how you can cultivate positivity and happiness in your life, do the things you love.
Remember forgiveness is a journey and if you are finding it difficult to move on from a situation or you feel stuck within the hurt, reach out to me and lets see if I can help you work through the situation.
