The Eastern Busway Alliance is helping lead the way in sustainable infrastructure, with a first for Auckland Transport.

We’re now using aggregate sourced from hydro excavation, a solution that reduces heavy truck movements on our roads and avoids the need to extract new materials. Our custom F2 drainage aggregate is produced locally at a plant that recycles all its water, supporting smarter use of resources from start to finish.

This initiative has been in the works since early 2024, and getting it across the line reflects the team’s persistence. Throughout the process, we’ve carried out thorough checks to make sure the material meets the high standards needed for civil works.

It’s a practical step forward, and a strong example of how we can move towards a more circular economy in New Zealand construction.

The Eastern Busway is delivered by an alliance of Auckland Transport with Fletcher Construction, ACCIONA, AECOM, and Jacobs, in partnership with mana whenua.

Congratulations to Sheena Hodge on being named a finalist in the 2026 National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) NZ Excellence Awards for Excellence in Health, Safety and Wellbeing.

As HSE Manager on the Eastern Busway Alliance, Sheena plays a key role in shaping the safety culture across one of Auckland’s largest infrastructure projects, supporting more than 360 people on site each day and influencing outcomes across a complex, high-impact environment.

Her leadership goes well beyond systems and compliance. From delivering safety leadership programmes to breaking down language barriers and strengthening more inclusive practices, Sheena is known for being visible, hands-on, and committed to lifting capability across teams and subcontractors.

With an industry-leading safety record and a strong focus on continuous improvement, she is helping create a culture where everyone goes home safe.
