To celebrate our 20th birthday, we've trawled through our archives and are bringing a few special cars you all may know back to light...
The Leopard/"V" Porsche 911 GT2 spec.
This car’s history with Pete goes back to its first arrival in NZ. This car is a facelift of a previous MotorScience project with Ray. The famous “Leopard Car" was the development of an earlier car Pete worked on in the 90’s for Don Kay. This car initially landed in NZ, being imported by Don with the help of Bill Fulford, as a German Championship Winning 964 Cup Car.
Don raced it in the New Zealand Super GT series to much success, but with the 3.6 engine it needed to go faster. Peter changed the engine to a naturally aspirated 4.0L putting out around 420hp and Don continued racing in Super GT. When the rules were changed to allow turbocharged engines, the 4.0L was swiftly swapped for a 3.6L twin turbo.
At this time the bodywork was altered, making it a wider GT2 spec car, similar to the Lighting Direct American LeMans 911 Turbos, but with water cooled intercoolers, rather than air to air. Don managed to set the Lap Record at Pukekohe, at 59.9 seconds (the first car under a minute), beating the Lighting Direct Porsche cars on the day.
Ray then bought this car as a successor to “The Ivory Beast” and development was continued for years with Motorscience, eventually developing into the “Leopard Car” putting out 800hp+ with which Ray achieved 41 race victories and won the Super GT Championship (now called the GT1 Championship) setting the lap record to a low 57 seconds at Pukekohe.
After an eventful race at Pukekohe the car needed to be rebuilt into the “V Car” with which Ray continued his success in the Super GT series. For Ray's last races in the GT2 it was painted Black, with CRC and Pit Stop livery, but the competition had finally surpassed its performance, making it uncompetitive after many years. Ray sold it to Guy S, in Christchurch, and Guy has enjoyed many more race victories in the South Island.

I learnt this week of the sad passing of Tony Dron - race car driver, motoring editor and journalist.
Tony drove the AFN Porsche Isleworth 928 S4 club sport in the 1988 B F Goodrich Porsche series - the first Porsche track car I was involved with.
Seen in photo in the first race of that series Brands Hatch on pole...
From what I remember he got pole by over .5 second against 911 RS and 930. It sure turned a few heads in the pits that day!!
He finished the 8 lap race in 3rd - hard to beat a 911 off the line.
A true gentleman and a damned fast race driver!! RIP
