An alternative learning & vocational programme in Auckland for exceptional teens (16–19) whose potential hasn’t been fully realised in mainstream education.

Two of our rangatahi recently visited the MAST Academy of New Zealand open day to explore another pathway into hands-on learning.

They got to hear about some of the projects students complete throughout the six-month programme, including building a toolbox to develop practical skills, making a stand-up paddleboard to learn about boat design, constructing a canoe using fibreglass, and refurbishing an engine. They also toured the workshop and learning spaces, met current students, and chatted with a tutor about his career and the programme.

So cool to see young people explore different options and discover pathways that match their interests, strengths, and goals.

There's always something happening at Hyphen, and our young people are right in the middle of making it happen.

Over the past few weeks they've been getting stuck into all sorts of projects around our space – from putting up a green screen for future creative projects to prototyping ideas and bringing them to life on our 3D printer.

They're all great opportunities to develop practical skills, solve real problems, and see ideas become reality.

We love providing a space where young people can learn by doing, explore their interests, and gain some meaningful, hands-on experiences along the way. 💡🛠️

This week we welcomed our newest Hyphen member... Woody 🐶🐾

He's been busy sharing the love with everyone, proofreading work, moving puzzle pieces around, and reminding us all that with work/play, rest must come.

His current obsession: cardboard rolls.

We look forward to all the joy and fun you'll bring to Hyphen, Woody. 💛

We often hear similar stories from parents about the challenges, questions, and uncertainties that can arise during the teenage years. It can be hard to know how best to support a young person as they navigate growing independence, identity, friendships, learning, and the wider world.

If this is something you're currently navigating, Holly has written a letter to you reflecting on some of these challenges, offering her thoughts and encouragement.

You can find the full letter here:

We're always experimenting, but this week we did some proper scientific ones 🧪🔬

From creating colourful artwork with a few household ingredients to generating electricity from a lemon. 🍋

A great reminder that some of the best learning happens when you're curious enough to ask "what happens if...?" 🤔

Holly recently joined Sandy Hall on the Hall & Hutch Podcast to talk all things Hyphen. 🎙️

From neurodivergence and self-awareness to creating learning environments where young people can forge their futures, this kōrero touches on many of the ideas that sit at the heart of what we do.

A huge thank you to Sandy for having us. We love the thoughtful conversations you create and the space you make for important discussions like this one.

We had a wonderful evening with the Lions Club of Remuera, where Holly and Katie had the opportunity to share the story and work of The Hyphen Project.

It's always encouraging to connect with people who are passionate about supporting young people and creating stronger communities. Thank you to the Lions Club of Remuera for the warm welcome, thoughtful questions, and interest in what we're building for exceptional teens as they forge their futures.

We're grateful for every opportunity to share our kaupapa and grow our network of supporters.

🌟 School Holiday Programme - Register Your Interest! 🌟

We're exploring the possibility of running a small-group school holiday programme for 8–13 year olds this July, with sessions led by our talented rangatahi, and we'd love your input.

We know that many young people thrive in smaller, more personalised environments, so sessions would be intentionally kept to just a handful of participants, allowing plenty of opportunity for connection, questions, creativity, and hands-on learning.

We're currently gathering interest to help shape the programme. If you have a child aged 8–13, we'd love to hear:
✅ Which activities they would be most interested in
✅ Which days would work best for your family

For more information and to register your interest, complete the expression of interest form here:

Please feel free to share with other families who may be interested. We look forward to creating something engaging, inspiring, and tailored to the interests of local tamariki.
