Auckland International Airport is one of the most demanding construction environments in New Zealand. It is a site of enormous value with major stakeholders including Auckland Council, and operated under tight regulatory control. Construction takes place alongside live airport operations, with the travelling public and thousands of airport workers moving through and around the works every day.
Strict resource consent conditions govern noise, dust and water management, and those conditions flow directly into construction contracts, where they can be enforced if negligence is proved. Continuous monitoring data provides evidence that contractors are meeting those obligations.
NZ Strong delivered a three-year construction project in that environment, Adroit's monitoring network included an Adroit weather station capturing rainfall for contractual time claims and wind data for craneage, internal environment sensors recording humidity and temperature inside an existing hangar, Adroit PMK - Dust and Adroit PMK - Noise monitors, and an Adroit water-level sensor tracking groundwater beside a major excavation.
NZ Strong innovation lead Jimmy Corric says the biggest lesson was that environmental monitoring quickly shifts from being a compliance requirement to becoming a management tool. "You stop thinking about the sensors and start thinking about the information. It helps you spot trends, make better decisions and deal with issues before they become problems."

Dust monitoring is playing an increasingly important role in helping quarries better understand site conditions, manage compliance obligations, and support operational decision-making.
That's exactly why Winstone Aggregates adopted the Adroit Portable Monitoring Kit (PMK), deploying real-time particulate monitoring across its quarry operations to gain greater visibility of dust levels and respond proactively to changing conditions.

ALGIM provides professional development and thought leadership for local government professionals across areas including ICT, digital, information management, customer service and GIS.
Adroit General Manager Guy Macpherson recently joined local government, engineering and environmental experts for an ALGIM webinar focused on one of the most urgent issues facing councils across Aotearoa New Zealand: how better data, monitoring and risk tools can support flood and landslip management. The discussion was particularly timely given the increasing frequency and intensity of severe weather events affecting communities around New Zealand.
Alongside Guy Macpherson, the panel included Darren De Klerk from Hastings District Council, Ben Westgate from Tonkin + Taylor, and Damien Young from Zealandia Consulting. The group shone a spotlight on how councils are responding to evolving flood and landslip risks, and how real-time data is helping shift resilience planning from reactive response to proactive decision-making.
A major focus of the discussion was Hastings District Council’s work following Cyclone Gabrielle, a devastating event causing extensive flooding and infrastructure damage across the Havelock North catchment.
For Adroit, participating in the ALGIM webinar was an opportunity to contribute to an important national conversation around resilience, preparedness and the future of environmental monitoring in New Zealand. The challenge is not simply choosing technology, but building systems that can evolve alongside changing risks and growing community expectations.

The Waitangi Endowment Forest has become the setting for one of Aotearoa’s most advanced wildfire-protection initiatives. A network of 250 ultra-early wildfire detection sensors is now active throughout the forest and the adjoining Waitangi Mountain Bike Park, establishing New Zealand’s first fully connected ‘smart forest’.
The collaboration between the Far North District Council (FNDC), Spark New Zealand, Adroit, and Germany-based Dryad Networks marks a major milestone for climate resilience in Aotearoa. The system detects the earliest chemical and thermal signatures of smouldering material, often long before there is visible flame or smoke, and sends alerts for rapid response. By focusing on early chemical indicators rather than visual cues, it brings detection forward into the smouldering phase, the critical early minutes when a small crew can extinguish a potential wildfire quickly and safely.
For a region increasingly exposed to drought and high winds, the installation represents a step change in environmental protection and a model for how regional authorities can use technology to safeguard land, people, and cultural heritage.
