We’ve got 100 reasons to celebrate this Matariki – as W***y and Smiley have turned 55! 🌟

Ectotherm keeper Jess made a bright and tasty enrichment of banana leaves, flowers and cactus (one of their favourites!) which they made quick work of with their sharp beaks.

These male Galápagos tortoises hatched at Honolulu Zoo in 1971 and came to Auckland Zoo in 1983. These tortoises are very long-lived and can live for over 100 years, with many surviving well past 150 years.

This means W***y and Smiley are only halfway through their lives, giving us many more years to care for these gentle giants.
