Not every Mobility Dog ends up where you expect β and sometimes that's the most wonderful thing of all.
Tui is a black Lab who began her life with us here at Mobility Dogs. But her path led somewhere a little different β to MPI, where she's been trained as a biosecurity detector dog keeping New Zealand's borders safe.
So much of the credit for who Tui is today goes to her puppy raiser, Andrea, from Dunedin. The calm, confident foundation Andrea built in those early months made everything that followed possible. π
After just two weeks paired with her new handler Wendy, Tui found her first item during training β validating in record time and proving she had everything it takes to do this job for real.
And then came the banana. π
Out in the field at the airport, Tui made her first live biosecurity find β intercepting a banana before it could cause harm. It's the first time a Mobility Dogs graduate has achieved this with MPI β and we think that deserves a moment.
Different cape, same superdog. We are so proud of you, Tui β and of everyone who helped shape her along the way. πΎπ

Look at this lot β and we've got a lot of shouting to do. π£πΎ
June is The Big Shout Out, a whole month dedicated to celebrating volunteers across Aotearoa, and this photo says it all. Six volunteers, five dogs in training, and enough dedication in one frame to make your heart very full indeed. To every puppy raiser and supporter who shows up week after week giving their time and love to Mobility Dogs β this month is for you. You are the reason these dogs get the start in life they deserve.
Kia ora rawa atu. We are so proud to have you in our corner. ππ§‘

One of the things that surprises people most about Mobility Dogs is just how much they can do around the home. Opening doors is one skill, but our dogs are also trained to tackle drawers, fridges, ranch sliders and cupboards β all using a tug rope, and all giving their future partner a level of independence that's hard to put into words. Sonny is getting to grips with it here, and from the look of things, he's going to be very good at it indeed. πͺπΎπ
Watch this boy work. πΎπ
That's Sonny β one year and eight months old, walking calmly alongside a power chair in the supermarket, carrying like a pro, completely unbothered by the world around him. He is, in every sense of the word, ready.
After months of training, Sonny is about to be placed with his partner β someone who has shared their life with a Mobility Dog before, and who knows just how transformative that bond can be. Sonny is their succession dog, and we couldn't think of a better match.
His trainer wrote these words in a letter to his future partner, and they say everything:
"He is a special boy for his young age. He's incredibly mature, calm, and responsive, and he has shown all the qualities we look for in a future service dog."
To place a dog this young, this settled, this ready β it doesn't happen often. Sonny is exceptional, and we have loved every moment of watching him grow.
Go well, Sonny. You are going to be everything and more. ππΎ
