Company member Liam Hinton is currently working upon a production of Adam Rapp's The Sound Inside; read what he said about the play below.
Liam Hinton plays Christopher, the enigmatic writing student. Liam loves the play; do read a few of his thoughts:
“Adam Rapp’s The Sound Inside contains, as all great literary works do, a host of contradictions: it’s an enigmatic, narratively slippery piece but honest & matter of fact in its presentation. It is, in part, about the ways artists hide themselves, yet the work, & by extension its writer, hides behind nothing - it is unflinchingly human.
As a play intensely concerned with loneliness & mortality, it is dark & at times confronting, but there’s something in it, I can’t readily articulate, that I find strangely comforting.
The title speaks to something within, invisible yet audible, standing in opposition to silence & emptiness. It calls to mind this Leonard Cohen quote/lyric: “There is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in.”
As someone with pretensions of being a writer, it is a cautionary tale, its conclusion (depending on one’s interpretation) can leave you with a chill. But I don’t think you need to write, or read, to connect with this work. I think you need to have felt desolate or experienced a moment of isolation you felt you couldn’t bridge, & no-one has dodged that bullet.
This play has been a privilege to have been exposed to & work upon.”
