🏡 Did You Know? Huntly Was Built on Coal!

As Propertyscouts Hamilton expands into Huntly, we've been learning more about the town's incredible history.

⛏️ Commercial coal mining began in Huntly in 1876, helping shape the town into one of New Zealand's most important mining communities. Coal from the Waikato coalfield powered industries, homes, riverboats, and later the iconic Huntly Power Station.

🚂 Coal was actually discovered in the area as early as 1842, and by the 1860s it was already being used to fuel steam-powered boats travelling along the Waikato River.

👷 At its peak, Huntly's coal industry attracted workers from across New Zealand, England, Scotland, and local Māori communities, creating the strong, hardworking spirit the town is still known for today.
