EVENT - Reminder! Wright Right Symposium May 2026 is only two weeks away!

The countdown is on! Dr Helen Walls The Writing Teacher will host the Write Right Symposium, New Zealand’s first dedicated writing symposium, in Wellington from 14–16 May 2026. The symposium will feature presentations from internationally and nationally recognised researchers, providing attendees with the knowledge and confidence to implement high-quality writing programmes in their own contexts. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with evidence-based approaches shown to improve student achievement, hear directly from global leaders in writing instruction, and explore successful practices already occurring within Aotearoa/New Zealand schools.

The event will also provide practical strategies for immediate classroom implementation, opportunities to connect with educators, leaders, and writing specialists from across the country, and in-depth workshops tailored to both junior and senior levels of schooling. Tickets are limited.

Mathematics is often challenging for children who struggle with reading, largely because years of difficulty accessing the language of mathematics can hinder their understanding.

For parents wishing to support their children at home, the Ministry of Education launched a new resource website this week. The site is still in its early stages, with ready-to-use content currently available for NZC Years 3–8. At first glance, it appears to be a valuable resource, and we look forward to exploring it more thoroughly over the holidays. While there is room for growth, it is certainly a positive step forward and far better than having no support available for children and families.

Huge thanks to the Waikato Community Funders Group for hosting today’s Waikato Expo at the beautiful Hamilton Gardens Central Court 💛 The last time we were here, we were hosting our very first literacy conference — it’s changed a bit since then with all the amazing renovations.

The workshops were super helpful, and the stalls were amazing — full of great people and valuable information. Met many awesome, like-minded people doing incredible mahi in our communities, many of whom support vulnerable children and young people. Feeling inspired and grateful to be part of it all! 🙌
