Some vids and photos of last weekend's very quick trip to the Sth Island to paddle the Waimak River with Will Hjorth.
Will had paddle the river the day before with Canterbury Kayaking so knew what the river was running like. Me on the other hand just thought I'd go hell for leather and work the rapids and bluff corners out as I went. Not always the best option so a couple of swims to add to day 1. Still a good day for me but Will was starting to struggle over the last hour, having done a long day in the kayak the day before.
The following day I paddle Woodstock down to Gorge Bridge on my own trying to set a good time. Near the end there is a couple of good Bluff corners to negotiate and thinking I was invincible as I had been going great guns up until that point, I hit the first of the 2 full on. The bow wave was a beauty, bigger than a tsunami by all accounts and a nice cool swim on day 2 was added to the trip. The rolls were nonexistent on the trip so a bit more practice required there but still happy with around 53mins.
From there it was a quick trip to the airport to drop of the yellow beast and then the long drive all the way back to Hamilton for Xmas day.
