💛 “Massage” vs. Massage Therapy — What Every Dog Parent Should Know

I love seeing how many people want to support their dogs’ comfort, mobility, and wellbeing.
That intention matters — and your dog absolutely feels it. 💛

But here’s something important to understand:

Massage therapy is not the same as simply rubbing or petting your dog.

Therapeutic canine massage works directly with your dog’s soft tissue, nervous system, joints, and movement patterns — and when done incorrectly, it can unintentionally cause discomfort, inflammation, or even injury.

Where things can go wrong:

• Applying pressure in the wrong areas
• Working over inflamed or injured tissue
• Missing subtle signs of pain or stress
• Stimulating tissue that actually needs rest
• Masking pain instead of addressing the cause

Dogs are incredibly stoic. Many will tolerate discomfort quietly — especially when it comes from someone they love.

Why professional training matters

Becoming a canine massage therapist involves:
• Detailed anatomy & physiology
• Understanding pathology and contraindications
• Learning to read canine body language in real time
• Knowing when not to work on tissue
• Adapting techniques to each individual dog

Massage therapy is clinical, intentional, and highly individual — it’s not a one-size-fits-all approach.

The good news?

You can support your dog at home — when you’re taught how.

I teach pet parents safe, appropriate techniques tailored specifically to their dog, so they can confidently support comfort and mobility between professional sessions — without risk.

✨ The safest, most loving thing you can do for your dog is:
✔️ Learn from a qualified professional
✔️ Understand your dog’s unique needs
✔️ Combine at-home care with professional therapy

👉 Book a professional session to learn how to support your dog safely and effectively.
Your dog deserves informed, intentional care — not guesswork.

🌟 Exciting News! 🌟
A warm welcome to our newest Canis Bodyworks Mentorship student, who has officially begun their journey toward becoming a Certified Professional Canine Massage Therapist! 🐾💆‍♂️

This intensive mentorship is part of the internationally recognised NBCAAM-accredited programme — a gold standard in canine massage education. Students dive deep into anatomy, physiology, behaviour, biomechanics, and clinical techniques, gaining the skills to assess, treat, and support dogs through every stage of life and recovery.

💡 Why does this matter?
Because professional canine massage isn’t just “patting the dog” — it’s evidence-based, anatomy-informed therapeutic work that supports the musculoskeletal system, nervous system, and emotional wellbeing of the dogs we love.

Having trained, certified therapists ensures every massage session is safe, effective, and tailored to each individual dog’s needs — whether for rehabilitation, performance support, or everyday comfort.

🐶✨ Each new student means another step toward raising professional standards and expanding access to skilled canine bodywork across New Zealand.

🐾Meet Louie — the sweetest little 3-year-old Border Terrier who reminded us how teamwork between owners, walkers, and therapists keeps dogs feeling their best. 🐾

Louie’s regular dog walker noticed a slight change in his gait — a perfect example of why having attentive people in your dog’s life makes all the difference. His mum acted straight away and booked a therapeutic massage assessment with me.

During our session, we found tight hamstrings and several trigger points along his back (epaxial muscles) — areas that can easily cause discomfort or compensatory movement if left untreated.

Louie took to massage like a duck to water! 🦆 He relaxed beautifully and responded so well to the techniques. I also showed his mum a few simple, targeted massage techniques to use at home to support his ongoing comfort and mobility.

✨ Regular massage can help detect and address small issues before they become big problems — especially for active dogs like Louie. ✨

If you’ve noticed your dog moving differently, slowing down, or just not seeming themselves, now is the perfect time to book a therapeutic massage assessment.
Let’s keep those muscles happy, healthy, and pain-free.
