The mighty Hollyford river is a wild & notorious piece of water draining 72kms of glacial streams falling a from a parade of ranges on all sides including the Darren’s, towering around 2700m. Its major tributary is the super impressive Pyke River, 25km meandering through the mountains making a massive total catchment. The Hollyford river drains from Lake Mckerrow, Whakatipu Waitai which 15km of deep Fiord blocked off by sediment from the sea. The Hollyford on calmer days was a great surfing spot, if you could battle the current and sand banks. It was a piece of water to be taken very seriously where local lore speaks of many sea goers have struck disaster over the years. This day was inbetween, water was moving about and it was super impressive how Creed McTaggart navigated the historically difficult Fiordland waters.
