This week is National Volunteer Week, celebrating the contribution of volunteers in our community.

The Silver Stream Railway of today is the sum of 70 years of volunteers investing their time into the preservation of New Zealand’s railway heritage and all the things that crop up along the way to ensure that this important work can continue for many years to come. Whether that is something related like fixing the rollingstock or track and operating the railway for the enjoyment of thousands of people a year, right through to tree planting and pest trapping to ensure the environment in which the railway operates also thrives, our volunteers and the skills they bring are key to what we achieve every day.

These pictures show how our organisation continues to evolve, beginning right back in our early days (1968) of one of our first items preserved being pulled from its old workplace by hand, right through to our celebration of 150 years of the railway reaching Upper Hutt in February this year.

If you are looking for something to do with your free time, this could be your year to volunteer. Hop along to our website and take a look at our membership page, or come along to one of our operating days and talk to our friendly team about what you might be able to do to help.

Our next operating day is Sunday the 7th of June from 11am featuring Standard Railcar R.M.30 built at the Hutt Railway Workshops in 1938.

As Kings Birthday does not fall on the first Sunday of the month this year, we are giving our hardworking volunteers the weekend off operating trains.

Silver Stream Railway is open again this Sunday the 3rd of May, featuring steam train rides behind our Barclay steam locomotive #1749. This loco was used to construct and rebuild railway lines in the North Island for the Public Works Department and New Zealand Railways before it was retired and saved by Sir Len Southward. Ride in the open wagon and step back in time to when the loco was working to build some of New Zealand's important infrastructure.

We open at 11am regardless of weather*, with rides running on demand through out the day. Entry tickets allow as many rides as you want on the day of issue. The last train leaves at approximately 3:45pm.

For more information on where to find us, ticket prices, and information about the railway and the historic items that call it home, please check out our website www.silverstreamrailway.org.nz

*The open wagon will be substituted for an enclosed guards van in poor weather.
