So let me tell you a 'tail' this …
New Zealand servicemen of the First World War were distinguished by their hats. Dubbed the iconic kiwi ‘lemon squeezer’ because of their shape, these hats were first worn by the Taranaki Rifles Regiment. The design was inspired by Mt Taranaki, however, it was practical because it allowed rain to run off.
The lemon squeezer hat was replaced for working dress by a battledress cap in October 1956. It was retained for ceremonial use until August 1961 and then reintroduced again for ceremonial use in 1978 and is still worn today. Similar hats to the lemon squeezer were worn by both the US Army and the Canadians during World War 1.
Now that's a bit of hiss-tory!
