“Open Polytechnic has allowed me to back up that practical experience with formal study - which not only helps me in my role at Jobsmith Recruitment but also shows that there is more than one pathway to being a skilled professional in this field,” says Open Polytechnic graduate Kayla Robinson.
Kayla, who is a Manager/Senior Recruitment Consultant at JOBsmith Recruitment in Lower Hutt, completed her NZ Certificate in Business (First Line Management) (Level 4) in November 2024.
Because she had previously worked in the insurance industry up until 2018, Kayla wanted to keep building on her recruitment skillset with Open Polytechnic.
“In this industry, a lot of people come through with university or HR qualifications, while my background has been very hands-on,” she says.
“Doing my studies has given me the chance to formalise the knowledge and experience I've built over the last seven years in recruitment.”
Online study with Open Polytechnic was really the best option for Kayla, that would fit with full-time work and parenting.
Through her studies Kayla learned more about managing people, while she found topics like Setting and Meeting Objectives helpful with supporting clients, managing JOBsmith as a company, and guiding her employees.
While it was tough at times, the flexibility meant she could make it work, even if it meant studying late nights or fitting in study around her daughter's school schedule.
Kayla has had the full support from Anne Smith, the owner of JOBsmith.
“Anne has been a great mentor and support with my studies, I have learned a lot of very valuable things about leadership and first line management which I feel contributed to the successful completion of my studies,” she says.
Studying has given Kayla new skills and confidence to better support her clients at JOBsmith, including members.
JOBsmith is an associate member of Master Joiners which means Kayla works with Master Joiner member businesses around New Zealand on recruitment for trade and technical roles within their industry.
“It's been rewarding to support these members in building strong teams and contributing to the success of their sector, it is important to understand the speciality nature of the work of those businesses,” Kayla says.
Kayla would “absolutely” recommend others study flexibly online with Open Polytechnic, including Master Joiners' member clients, with the range of Business, Project Management, Leadership and Marketing programmes relevant to those within the trade industry.
“Flexibility is the key, and I had amazing support from the owner of JOBsmith which made balancing study with work and parenting much easier,” she said.
“The highlight for me really was seeing that I can manage everything; managing JOBsmith, being a mum, studying and still finding time for hobbies, family and friends.”
