Abdullah ibn Mas’ud was a man with little wealth.
His wife - Zaynab al-Thaqafiyyah, who is also referred to in some narrations as Rā’iṭah was a skilled woman who worked with her hands, made and sold goods, and spent from her earnings on her husband and children.
She tells us;
“I was in the mosque when I saw the Prophet ﷺ, and he said:
‘Give charity, even if it is from your jewelry.’
And Zaynab al-Thaqafiyyah used to spend on Abdullah ibn Mas’ud and on orphans under her care.
She said to Abdullah: ‘Ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ whether it is sufficient for me to spend on you and on the orphans in my care from my charity.’
He replied: ‘You ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ yourself.’
So I went to the Prophet ﷺ and found a woman from the Ansar at the door whose need was the same as mine. Then Bilal ibn Rabah passed by us, and we said:
‘Ask the Prophet ﷺ whether it counts for me if I spend on my husband and on orphans in my care.’ And we told him: ‘Do not tell him who we are.’
Bilal entered and asked him. The Prophet ﷺ said:
‘Who are they?’
He replied: ‘Zaynab.’
The Prophet ﷺ asked: ‘Which Zaynab?’
He said: ‘The wife of Abdullah.’
He ﷺ said:
‘Yes. She will have two rewards: the reward of kinship and the reward of charity.’”

Every tree has a root. If you want to clear a garden of weeds, you don’t just trim the leaves; you have to dig up the base. The same is true for the human soul. Every mistake we make, every habit that pulls us away from Allah, and every dark thought that enters our mind has a starting point. Shaykh ul-Islam ibn Taymiyyah pointed to a profound reality when he said that the first sins by which Allah was disobeyed were three: Covetousness, Arrogance, and Jealousy.
These three roots are not just ancient history; they are the blueprints for every struggle we face today. To understand our own hearts, we must look back at how these roots first broke through the soil of creation.
The first was Arrogance, and it was displayed by Iblees. This is perhaps the most dangerous of the three because it is a sin of the intellect and the ego. When Allah commanded Iblees to bow to Adam, he didn't refuse because he was confused; he refused because he was proud. He said, "I am better than him." Arrogance is the refusal to accept the truth when it contradicts your own sense of importance. It is the fire that burns within a person, making them feel superior to others and ultimately making them feel like they don’t need the guidance of Allah. It was this pride that turned a devoted worshiper into the cursed Shaytan.
The second root is Covetousness, or the intense desire for what has been restricted, and this was displayed by Adam, peace be upon him. Unlike the arrogance of Iblees, this was not a sin of rebellion, but a lapse in judgment born from a desire for more. Allah had given Adam (AS) an entire Paradise, yet the whisper of the enemy focused him on the one thing he couldn't have. This teaches us about the "insatiable" nature of the human heart. If we don’t guard ourselves, we spend our lives chasing the one thing we lack while ignoring the thousands of blessings we already possess. However, the difference between the servant and the rebel is that Adam (AS) immediately turned back to Allah in repentance, showing us that while we may slip due to our desires, our return to Allah is what defines us.
The third root is Jealousy, and we see its devastating impact in the story of Qabeel and Habeel. Jealousy is the rot that settles in the heart when you cannot bear to see someone else receive a blessing from Allah. Qabeel didn't kill his brother because Habeel had done him wrong; he killed him because Allah had accepted Habeel’s sacrifice and not his own. Jealousy is a fire that consumes good deeds. It makes a person resent the decree of Allah. It is the silent killer of relationships and the primary reason why we often feel unhappy despite our own comforts. We are too busy looking at the "plates" of others to realize that our own is full.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ spent His ﷺ entire life providing the antidote to these three poisons through His ﷺ divine Tarbiyah. He ﷺ was the most humble man to walk the earth, crushing the root of Arrogance by sitting with the poor, eating with the slaves, and mending His ﷺ own clothes. He ﷺ killed the root of Covetousness by living a life of extreme simplicity, often going months without a cooked meal in His ﷺ house, showing us that true wealth is the contentment of the soul. And He ﷺ removed the root of Jealousy by teaching us that no one truly believes until they love for their brother what they love for themselves.
When you feel yourself slipping into a sin, ask yourself: which root is growing in me right now? Is it my pride telling me I’m too good for this advice? Is it my greed telling me I need what is forbidden to be happy? Or is it my envy making me bitter over someone else’s success?
The world tries to feed these roots every day. Social media fuels our arrogance and jealousy, while consumerism fuels our covetousness. But the believer is a gardener of the soul. Through Salah, Dhikr, and the study of the life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, we can pull these roots out before they turn into trees that block our path to Jannah.
Allah is Al-Ghaffar, the All-Forgiving. He gave us these stories not to condemn us, but to guide us. He wants us to recognize these patterns so we can find our way back to Him, just as our father Adam (AS) did.
