THE EASTER VIGIL TONIGHT

Black Saturday does not end in darkness.
It ends in fire.

Tonight — after the sun goes down — the Church gathers in complete darkness outside her doors.

A fire is kindled.

And from that fire — the Paschal Candle is lit.

And the deacon carries it into the dark church — singing three times the most ancient Easter proclamation:

Lumen Christi.
The Light of Christ.

And the congregation answers — three times — from the darkness:
Deo Gratias.
Thanks be to God.

And the church fills with light.

One candle at a time.
From the Paschal Candle — to the candles of the faithful — light spreading through the darkness —
like Easter morning spreading through the darkness of Black Saturday.

Like the Risen Christ walking out of the sealed tomb into the first light of Sunday.

And then — for the first time in forty days —
the bells ring.
And the Gloria is sung.
And the word that has been silent since Ash Wednesday — the word that has been fasting along with us —
is spoken again for the first time:
ALLELUIA.

Black Saturday ends tonight.
And it ends in fire. 🕯️🌅
