Phylogenetic analysis of Dianthus using ITS and RAPD markers reveals insights for carnation breeding - Botanical Studies
Background Carnation and Dianthus (Dianthus spp) are globally cultivated as a cut flower, yet high summer temperatures in Taiwan significantly reduce the yield and quality of commercial cultivars. To enhance stress tolerance traits such as heat resistance and disease resistance, interspecific and intergeneric hybridization with native species is a viable approach. Since the success of hybridization is influenced by genetic distance, this study aimed to clarify the phylogenetic relationships among native species, commercial cultivars, and interspecific hybrids using internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. Results Phylogenetic analysis based on RAPD markers effectively differentiated among native Taiwanese species, commercial varieties, interspecific hybrids, and outgroup taxa. ITS markers, on the other hand, were more informative for identifying parent-offspring relationships. Notably, Dianthus superbus var. longicalycinus from Taiwan and Japan, despite sharing the same scientific name, exhibited clear distinctions in both morphological traits and molecular profiles. Conclusions The combined use of RAPD and ITS markers provides complementary insights into the genetic relationships within the Dianthus genus. These findings not only support the strategic use of molecular markers in breeding programs but also highlight the need to reassess taxonomic classifications among morphologically similar varieties. This study provides genetics, breeding tools, and germplasm information for future Dianthus breeding.

Congratulations to Our Newly Licensed Agriculturists!
The long wait ended today as the results of the Licensure Examination for Agriculturists were released, and SLSU-Bontoc Campus proudly celebrated a new group of successful board passers. The BS Agriculture program marked another meaningful milestone through the achievements of Fern Ann B. Baluran, Aliza P. Batiao, Jaya P. Batiao, Christine C. Casil, Jema M. Golo, Jefferson L. Felicilda, Zhyra B. Ongy, Alan Jay R. Olayvar, Armaldo P. Pizon, and Angelica L. Velasco. Their hard work paid off, and their names now stand as proof of perseverance, late nights, and countless hours spent mastering their field.
This year, they've earned a passing rate of 76.92 percent, rising above the national passing rate of 68.56 percent. Their performance added another proud chapter to the growing record of SLSU-Bontoc examinees who consistently show that students from a small campus can achieve big things. Each passer carried not only personal dreams but also the hopes of their families, mentors, and community. Seeing them succeed reminded everyone that commitment and steady effort can lead to moments like this.
Their success was not simply a result of studying. It came from the support of instructors who guided them, classmates who encouraged them, and a campus environment that pushed them to keep improving. Many of these students came from simple backgrounds, yet they proved that excellence is within reach when someone believes in their own potential.
As they step forward as newly licensed agriculturists, their journey becomes an inspiration to the students who will follow after them. Their achievement showed that challenges are not barriers but stepping stones. They reminded the entire campus that agriculture remains a strong and meaningful field, especially in communities that rely on it for growth and progress.
Today, SLSU-Bontoc Agriculture Students Society stands proud. These passers carried the name of the campus with honor, and their accomplishments will continue to inspire both present and future students. Their hard-earned licenses are not just credentials. They are symbols of resilience, hope, and the bright future they are now ready to build for the agricultural sector and for the communities they serve.

π± "Rambutan and Langka Tree Planting" π³
Today, October 24, 2025 our Environmental Science class took action beyond the classroom through a meaningful Tree Planting Activity featuring Rambutan and Langka (Jackfruit) seedlings! π
Guided by our dedicated adviser, Maβam Camille P. Acilo together with Mr. Noel Celeste, we planted not just trees but hope for a greener, healthier environment. Each seedling symbolizes our shared responsibility to protect and sustain our planet for future generations. π
Together, we learned that small acts like planting a single tree can lead to lasting change. Letβs keep growing, caring, and making our surroundings thrive! πΏβ¨
