In my years of practice, I’ve learned that design is as much about perception as it is about measurement. When I'm working with relatively compact footprints, I use these 4 strategies to make a space feel truly expansive:

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐞: I prefer using a single floor material throughout the area. When the flooring is uninterrupted, your eye perceives one large, flowing space instead of small, chopped-up zones.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐕𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐜𝐡: I always recommend floor-to-ceiling drapes and full-height cabinetry. By drawing your gaze upward, I’m shifting the focus from a narrow width to the soaring height of the room.

𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬: I look for furniture with "breathable" silhouettes, think tapered legs or glass surfaces. When I keep the floor visible beneath the furniture, the room feels open and airy rather than "full."

𝐁𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐝 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐬: I align interior sightlines with windows and greenery. By visually connecting the inside to the world outside, I’m making the horizon your boundary and not the walls.
