That Old Email Address Might Be Your Weakest Link

I used to hang out in some questionable corners of the internet—forums with handles I don’t use anymore, tied to an email I’d long forgotten.

Or so I thought.

Last week, I ran a quick OSINT scan on my own usernames (because why not audit yourself before someone else does?), and there it was—an ancient account, still linked to that dusty email. Compromised. Public. Still traceable.

It made me realize something uncomfortable:
We secure our new systems but forget to close old doors.

Here’s what I suggest:

Audit your email history and delete unused accounts.

Run your known usernames through tools like Sherlock or Maigret.

Use aliasing or masked emails going forward.

And never assume forgotten equals gone.
