Amid recurring floods and other disasters facing the country, it has become more pronounced and urgent that resilience is everyoneโs business. Building resilient systems and communities at different levels of engagements has become an imperative. These stories, often left untold, need to be shared and recognized.
Dr Emma Porio of the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) and Engr Dexter Lo of Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan (XU) document some of these stories of resilience across the country. Porio and Lo serve as members of the Field Validation Committee for the Philippine Resilience Awards, an initiative led by the Climate Change Commission of the Philippine Government, where they help identify and document inspiring examples of resilience in action.

Our Story
Social engagement is a mark of a Jesuit institution. At Xavier University, this is embodied in the cluster for Social Development (SD). The SD cluster consolidates and strengthens the decades of experience and gains from institutional social engagement through its various college-based and expertise-based centers and institutes. It also sets the directions for development initiatives aligned with the Universityโs mission and vision, as it continually strives to be a relevant player in the development of Mindanao, the Philippines, and the Southeast Asian region.
There are three modes of engagement at Xavier Ateneo namely, Service Learning, Student Social Involvement, and Advocacy, and Institutional Societal Engagement.
First, Service Learning program which facilitates the disciplinal-based engagement of students who are in their junior and senior years to various under-served communities we partner with.
Second, the Student Social Involvement and Advocacy program which engages tertiary students at-large for involvement in pressing social issues through exposures in social development work, mobilizations, volunteer, and advocacy work for the cluster.
