In 1997, the FIA introduced new "World Rally Car" rules that allowed manufacturers to build highly bespoke, prototype-style race cars without needing to build thousands of road-going equivalents. While rivals like Subaru and Ford immediately switched to these new regulations, Mitsubishi stubbornly stuck to the old, strictly regulated Group A rules. This meant their race car had to remain mechanically close to the production car sold in showrooms. Despite the technological disadvantage, Tommi Mäkinen still beat the advanced WRC prototypes to win the 1997, 1998, and 1999 world titles.
