The Spirit That Stayed

Mittens died quietly, curled in her favorite sunspot on the windowsill. The old woman, her only companion, wept softly as she wrapped the tiny body in a velvet cloth and buried her beneath the cherry tree.

But Mittens didn’t go far.

She lingered — soft paws brushing across the veil between worlds. The gate to the other side waited, glowing with warmth and peace. But she turned away.

The woman still needed her.

Each night, the woman sat in her rocking chair, alone but not alone. A gentle weight would settle on her lap, warm and invisible. She would smile and whisper, “Good girl.”

When the woman finally passed, the house grew silent for the first time in years. The gate opened again, calling both souls. But Mittens still would not leave — not yet. Now, she waited for the next lonely heart who needed quiet comfort. A warm shape by the fire. A whisper of purrs in the night.

Some say she’s still there — a guardian spirit. Not bound by sorrow, but by love.

A cat who chose to stay.
