what is celiac disease?
Coeliac disease is a condition where your immune system attacks your own tissues when you eat gluten. This damages your gut (small intestine) so you are unable to take in nutrients. Coeliac disease can cause a range of symptoms, including diarrhoea, abdominal pain and bloating.

What is the main cause of celiac disease?
Coeliac disease is caused by an abnormal immune system reaction to the protein gluten, which is found in foods such as bread, pasta, cereals and biscuits.

What does celiac disease do to a person?
Celiac disease is a digestive problem that hurts your small intestine. It stops your body from taking in nutrients from food. You may have celiac disease if you are sensitive to gluten. If you have celiac disease and eat foods with gluten, your immune system starts to hurt your small intestine.

How do I know if I'm celiac?
A GP will arrange a blood test to check for antibodies usually present in the blood of people with coeliac disease. You should include gluten in your diet when the blood test is done because avoiding it could lead to an inaccurate result.
