“I have a dream!” This is a line from Martin Luther King’s famous speech. Like him, I also do have a benevolent dream. My name is Kyle Anthony Tejero and this is the story of my dream.

Being in love with music since infancy, I found fondness in singing I have to give credit to my family for that influence. I used to be in the local entertainment scene singing in clubs and gigs not for the money but for the passion. That passion brought me and my brothers to venture to a club business where local bands and talents can share their passion for such. As an investor and partner, I have to know the ins and outs of the business and it was there that I found my hobby in Bartending. A hobby that soon became a passion which I brought it to the international scene. Even at my young age, I aspired to work abroad which is for me the prime definition of success.

From an ordinary bartender of Shangrila Hotel Cebu in 2001, I expanded my horizon and continued crafting my skills under the Costa Cruises: an International Bartender from 2004 to 2013, the company showed me that patience, the right attitude and passion for the job will be rewarded when they promoted me as International Head Bartender in 2014 up to 2016. Humbled by my achievements while with Costa Cruises, I decided to impart all the learnings and skills of being a Barista as an Instructor and Trainer of Magsaysay Center for Hospitality and Culinary Arts (MHCA), and became the Beverage Trainer in Costa, to all Filipino bartending hopefuls. And now i am proud to be under the wings of a prestigious cruiseline in the world, the Royal Carribean International.

I am truly grateful for all the experiences, the opportunities that life has afforded me. It wouldn’t be possible without my family. My mom Juliet Magdamit Tejero - my rock, my mentor and without her I am nothing. My Brothers Alister, Khim and P***y – all of them has become my instruments of my craft, my passion and my outlook in life. Yet, nothing stands out more than having a family of my own. My wife Kristine Abrera has blessed us with 3 lovely kids, Tonet, Sophia and baby Kali.

Though I really love my job, maturity and just being a family man had me thinking. I realized that I will never be an OFW all my life. My years aboard the ship has been bitter sweet. It brought me the financial capacity to provide the essential needs of my family yet it deprived me years of primary responsibility not only to my mother, my brothers but most importantly to my wife and kids. Time ha been my greatest adversary. That is why I reached a very sound financial decision which is a critical and essential element of becoming financially independent and a stability upon retirement. Sadly, a large number of OFWs are not ready to return permanently to the Philippines. This is because they didn’t have concrete financial blueprints for their retirement. Some OFWs, too, are still in need of finding a new source of income upon returning home.

The problem with retirement is that your daily expenditures never stop even if your monthly paychecks have. When you get old and your health declines, you will need medicine, food, and pay for utilities regularly. YOU WILL CONTINUE TO SPEND MONEY.

Retirement planning is one of the most important financial goals you’ll need to undertake; failure to do so could ruin everything. When you don’t have a savings plan, you will end up with tragic debts causing your family to financially and emotionally distressed. The best time to start it is NOW while you are still working for it provides additional income while enjoying the work you are currently have.

Some financial goals you might want to consider as an OFW is enjoy a debt-free life, secure a comprehensive health and life insurance, have a house you can call your own, invest in paper assets and have a passive or stable income like rental properties. Also, consider putting your money in smart investments that will provide you with financial security through time.

Needless to say, saving for retirement all comes d and own to discipline, commitment, and hard work. Aside from creating a budget and getting out of debt, build a long-term savings plan through investing a portion of your income regularly. It’s never too early or too late to prepare a retirement fund and achieve financial success
