During a close flyby of Panganiban or Mischief Reef, occupiers of the artificial island fired flares while repeatedly radio-challenging a Philippine Coast Guard aircraft conducting a maritime domain awareness flight within the Philippines’ Exclusive Economic Zone near Palawan.
The move was described as dangerous by Philippine Coast Guard Spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, Rear Admiral Jay Tarriela, who was on board the aircraft with several journalists. The group was en route back from a visit to Pag-asa Island.
