Amid the rampant fake news proliferating on social media, the Land Transportation Office (LTO), under the leadership of Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Vince Dizon, is eyeing strong coordination with the Philippine National Police (PNP) in fighting disinformation campaigns.

Amid the continuous monitoring of social media against viral photos and videos of erring motorists, LTO Chief, Assistant Secretary Atty. Vigor D. Mendoza II said the agency’s social media monitoring team has been coming across with misinformation and disinformation drive targeting.

“Madaming nagpapakalat ng maling impormasyon at ang malungkot nito ay marami silang nalolokong mga kababayan natin. Hindi po natin pinapansin ito noong una dahil mas may malaki tayong inaasikaso na matapos ang backlog sa mga plaka,” said Asec Mendoza.

“The wrong information is being disseminated in the form of news or breaking news and this could be the reason why a lot of our netizen kababayan are falling for these misinformation and disinformation campaigns. Kailangan na nating lababan ito,” he added.

The latest misinformation and disinformation drive against the LTO was a video posted on Tiktok claiming that the Online Drivers Licensing System and the suspension of at least four courier services.

Asec Mendoza was quick to clarify that the Online Drivers Licensing System is still working and that there is no truth about the claimed suspension of courier service.

“Nakikita natin yung motibo na paninira lang talaga na ang intension ay magalit ang tao sa gobyerno at the expense of the LTO,” said Asec Mendoza.

The coordination with the PNP came as the top police leadership launched an aggressive drive against fake news peddlers that resulted in the filing of charges against several vloggers.

The recent case filed was about a scuffle in a passenger bus in Cebu but was made appear by the vlogger that it was a case of broad daylight robbery.

“Kailangang matigil ito at kailangan ang pagtutulungan para panagutin ang mga taong nasa likod ng mga fake news na ito,” said Asec Mendoza. #

ON THE FAKE NEWS LINKING THE CHIEF OF POLICE OF TIGAON TO ALLEGED STATEMENTS AGAINST HIS SUPERIORS

I, the undersigned Chief of Police of Tigaon, strongly deny and condemn the malicious and baseless online article falsely claiming that I accused my superiors—Police Colonel Virgilio Of Olalia, Jr, Provincial Director of the Camarines Sur Police Provincial Office, and Police Brigadier General Nestor C Babagay, Jr, Acting Regional Director of Police Regional Office 5 of protecting illegal gambling operations in Tigaon, Camarines Sur.

Let it be made absolutely clear: I have never made such statements, nor have I issued or authorized any pronouncement related to these false allegations. The words and accusations attributed to me in this fabricated report are entirely untrue, maliciously crafted, and intended to discredit not only myself but also the integrity of the Philippine National Police leadership in the region.

As a proud member of the PNP, I have always upheld the principles of honor, justice, and integrity in the performance of my duties. I firmly support our organization’s campaign against illegal gambling and all other forms of criminal activity. At no time have I engaged in any action that undermines my superiors or tarnishes the name of the institution I serve.

I urge the public to remain vigilant against fake news and disinformation. The Tigaon Municipal Police Station will take all necessary steps to identify the source of this fabricated article and ensure that those responsible are held accountable under the law.
