A 7.6 magnitude earthquake has triggered tsunami warnings for areas of the northeastern coast of Japan, the country's meteorological agency said, revising up its initial reading of a 7.2 earthquake.
A 10 ft-high tsunami could hit Japan's north-eastern coast following a powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake that struck offshire at 11.15 p.m. local time, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said.
Tsunami warnings have been issued for the prefectures of Hokkaido, Aomori and Iwate, while tsunami warnings from between 7 to 18 inches high have also been issued at multiple ports. Residents along the effected coastlines have been ordered to evacuate.
