In celebration of Womenโs Month and as part of its continuing extension program, the General Education Unit of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines - Jasaan, in partnership with the Gender and Development (GAD) Office of USTP Jasaan, Rotary Club of Central Jasaan, Womenโs Organization of Barangay Natubo, and the Natubo Barangay Council, conducted a community symposium on sexual harassment, violence against women and children (VAWC), and womenโs mental well-being on March 26, 2026, in Barangay Natubo, Jasaan, Misamis Oriental.
The outreach activity aimed to strengthen awareness on womenโs rights, legal protection, personal safety, and mental health, while encouraging the community to take part in creating a safer and more supportive environment for women and children.
The session opened with โ๐๐ณ๐ฆ๐ข๐ต๐ช๐ฏ๐จ ๐๐ฑ๐ข๐ค๐ฆ ๐ง๐ฐ๐ณ ๐๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ฏ,โ led by ๐ฃ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ด.
๐ ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ป๐ฒ ๐ ๐ฐ๐๐๐ผ๐ of the Women and Children Protection Desk (WCPD), PNC, Jasaan Municipal Police Station. In their discussion, the speakers emphasized the importance of building spaces where women feel safe, respected, protected, and empowered.
They also discussed the role of law enforcement in responding to cases involving women and children, while reminding participants that reporting abuse, harassment, and violence is an important step in seeking justice and protection. The speakers encouraged women to become more aware of their rights and to not remain silent in situations that threaten their safety and dignity.
Part of their discussion also focused on ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ฝ๐๐ฏ๐น๐ถ๐ฐ ๐๐ฐ๐ ๐ก๐ผ. ๐ญ๐ญ๐ฏ๐ญ๐ฏ, or the ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ณ๐ฒ ๐ฆ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ ๐๐ฐ๐, more commonly known as the ๐๐ป๐๐ถ-๐๐ฎ๐๐๐ผ๐ ๐๐ฎ๐. The police officers explained that the law protects individuals from gender-based sexual harassment in public spaces, educational institutions, workplaces, and even online platforms. Through this, participants were given a clearer understanding that offensive comments, catcalling, unwanted gestures, sexual remarks, and other similar actions are not harmless behavior, but forms of harassment that may be punishable under the law.
Another key part of the symposium was the discussion on โ๐๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ต๐ข๐ญ ๐๐ฆ๐ข๐ญ๐ต๐ฉ ๐ง๐ฐ๐ณ ๐๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ฏโ๐ด ๐๐ฆ๐ญ๐ญ-๐๐ฆ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ,โ delivered by ๐ ๐. ๐ฆ๐ต๐ฎ๐๐ป๐ฒ ๐ฃ. ๐๐ฎ๐๐ผ, ๐๐ฃ๐ง, ๐ฅ๐ฃ๐ , ๐ ๐๐๐ (๐๐๐ฅ), Guidance Advocate of USTP Jasaan. In her lecture, Jayo emphasized that womenโs welfare should not only be viewed in terms of physical safety, but also through the lens of emotional and psychological well-being.
She discussed how stress, trauma, discrimination, family pressure, and painful experiences such as abuse or neglect can deeply affect a womanโs mental health. She also underscored the importance of emotional support, self-awareness, and seeking help when needed.
Her discussion reminded participants that mental health care is an essential part of empowerment, healing, and personal growth.
The initiative also reflected USTP Jasaanโs broader commitment to promoting gender sensitivity, community development, and social responsibility through relevant and responsive extension programs. By bringing conversations on womenโs safety, dignity, and well-being directly to Barangay Natubo, the university and its partners helped strengthen awareness and encourage collective action at the grassroots level.
More than a Womenโs Month observance, the symposium served as a reminder that creating safer communities for women and children requires continuous education, active participation, and shared responsibility. Through efforts like this, USTP Jasaan and its partner organizations continue to uphold not only academic service, but also their role in advancing protection, empowerment, and social awareness in the communities they serve.

The 5-kilometer advocacy run drew hundreds of participants to the streets of Jasaan, symbolizing a collective stride toward gender equality and the celebration of female leadership.
โThe event was a masterclass in community synergy, organized in close coordination with the Jasaan Community Runners (JCR) and key university sectors, including Gender and Development (GAD), the National Service Training Program (NSTP), VOICES, University Student Government (USG), and The Cache Publication.
โThe initiative was further bolstered by various corporate and local sponsors, whose contributions provided the necessary resources to ensure a safe and high-energy experience for all runners. Beyond the physical race, the event featured segments dedicated to raising awareness for gender-sensitive issues, reinforcing the university's commitment to the GAD mandate.
โBy bridging the gap between alumni, current students, and the local community, the USTP Jasaan Alumni Association continues to establish itself as a pillar of social responsibility. As the dust settles on the 5 km route, the impact of "Run the World 2026" remainsโa testament to the power of collaborative leadership in Jasaan.
