MANY USE IT, BUT DON'T KNOW WHAT IT MEANS...

In the early 70s the first Emergency Services developing in the United States chose an orange cross as a medical symbol. This symbol conflicts with the one used by the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The American Red Cross did not approve it because it violated international treaties where it protected itself from indiscriminate use. This emblem, in any of its variations, could only be used to protect against violence during war conflicts and to ensure humanitarian work, and not by civilian teams during peacetime.

This forces health services to have to look for a new symbol to identify them within the Emergency system. The only corporation that could sustain it. It was "Jhonson & Jhonson" when protected by a federal law in the US

Facing this situation Leo R. Schwartz, on February 1, 1973 was one of the managers of the National Highway Safety Administration, where he designed a blue star with a special configuration, where each bar represented each of the six components of the system.

What Does The Star of Life Mean?

The star of life, as it intended to represent its inventor, represents the time we must spend with a patient following established steps, which should last 10 minutes.

This means that, if we add each event that we perform at each point of the six that the star has in the set order, as if we were looking at the hands of a clock, we would realize that this star represents the patient's "golden hour".

The six tips of the star of life indicate the six tasks that Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians (AEMTs) and PARAMEDICs have to perform, following the survival chain:

1- The first tip is the emergency call to the office, an office that channels resources, understood as such resources to health workers, police officers, firefighters, etc.

2-The second point is the notification to the staff or resource necessary to solve the intervention.

3-The third tip is the early response of the personnel who are on their way to attend the Emergency, emergency or accident.

4-The fourth tip is the care at the place of intervention that the TEM dispenses to the injured.

5-The fifth point is the care in the transport to the hospital that the TEM disposes to the patient in the ambulance.

6-The sixth point is the transfer to the useful health center according to the patient's pathology, where he will receive the final care.
