Genoa, or Genova, is a grand Mediterranean seaport and the capital of the Liguria region in northwestern Italy. Nicknamed La Superba ("The Proud One") for its illustrious past, the city is a captivating blend of ancient grit and aristocratic splendor, rising dramatically from the sea to the Apennine mountains.
Genoa's history dates back to pre-Roman times, but its golden age was as one of the four great Maritime Republics (along with Venice, Pisa, and Amalfi). From the 11th to the late 18th century, the Republic of Genoa was a dominant economic and naval power, controlling vast trade routes across the Mediterranean and Black Seas.
