Occupational Therapy Consultancy

𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿: 𝗢𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘀𝘁 × 𝗗𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁—making dental visits calmer, safer, and more comfortable.

Meet Isaac. Today, we welcomed him for his very first dental visit.

For many children, dental appointments can be challenging. Bright lights, loud tools, strong smells, and unfamiliar touch may create sensory overload. Changes in routine, fear of new environments, and difficulty understanding or communicating what’s happening can also increase stress, making it harder for them to stay calm and cooperative.

This is where collaboration matters. Working together, an Occupational Therapist and a dentist can help ausome kids experience smoother, safer, and more positive dental cleanings.

Teacher Darlene provided sensory and behavioral support—using calming techniques, behavioral shaping, and regulation strategies—to help Isaac feel more relaxed and confident. She first introduced him to the clinic to build familiarity, which reduces anxiety and supports sensory regulation. We gave Isaac the time he needed, and he eventually chose to sit on the dental chair on his own—an important victory.

On the dental side, our skilled dentist, Doc Pau, applied child-centered behavioral approaches. With gentle guidance, clear step-by-step instructions, visual supports, and sensory-friendly adjustments, she helped Isaac feel safe, understood, and comfortable throughout the process. We were able to clean his teeth with his full cooperation.

Together, this teamwork built trust, reduced stress, and created a positive dental experience—one that supports Isaac’s confidence and long-term oral health. 23/11/2025

Why are transitions so tough for kids?

It’s not just that they “don’t want to stop playing.” There are real developmental reasons behind those tricky moments between activities:

⏰ They don’t fully understand time
🧠 Executive functioning skills are still developing
💥 Emotional regulation can be hard, especially when they’re asked to stop something they love
❓Not knowing what’s next can feel overwhelming

If you’ve seen tears, refusals, or big feelings during transitions… you’re not alone. The struggle is real—and it’s valid.
