Feline Calicivirus (FCV) is a major cause of acute oral ulceration and chronic gingivostomatitis in cats, causing severe gum inflammation, pain, and drooling. While acute infections usually resolve in 1–2 weeks, persistent infection can lead to chronic, painful inflammation of the mouth lining, often requiring veterinary management.

Clinical Signs & Transmission

A. Oral Ulcers - FCV commonly causes painful ulcers on the tongue, gums, and hard palate.

B. Chronic Gingivostomatitis - FCV is heavily associated with this severe, chronic oral inflammation, where the immune system reacts abnormally to oral plaque.

C. Extreme pain, excessive drooling (ptyalism), bad breath (halitosis), weight loss, and reduced appetite or reluctance to eat.

D. Highly contagious among cats, often spreading in shelters or multi-cat households.
