DESIGN EXPLORATION: Updating the Philippine Coat of Arms,
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Design and Symbolism
The coat of arms features a shield with the same colors as the Philippine flag: azure (blue) and gules (red). Key symbolic elements include:
Three Stars: Three five-pointed stars in the upper part represent Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
Eight-Rayed Sun: A golden-yellow sun in the center symbolizes the first eight provinces that revolted against Spanish rule.
American Eagle and Spanish Lion: These figures in the lower sections represent the historical influence of the United States and Spain.
Scroll and Motto: A scroll below the shield is inscribed with "REPUBLIKA NG PILIPINAS".
History
While the fundamental design by Galo B. Ocampo has been used since 1946, there have been minor changes to the inscription on the scroll. The motto has evolved from "REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES" (1946-1978 and 1986-1998) to "ISANG BANSA, ISANG DIWA" (One Nation, One Spirit) (1978-1986). Since 1998, the official inscription has been the Filipino "REPUBLIKA NG PILIPINAS," as mandated by the Flag and Heraldic Code. A proposed version without the eagle and lion exists but is not yet official.
