We are in a literacy crisis, and our public schools are doing everything they can to get us out of it. They hold remedial reading classes for struggling readers at all grade levels, and these programs work — but they are facing a heartbreaking problem.

Students are dropping out of these after-school classes, not because they lack the will to learn, but because they’re hungry. Our under-resourced, over-burdened public schools simply can’t provide the snacks or meals needed to sustain these young minds. Without food, their concentration slips, their progress stalls, and eventually, they stop coming altogether.

We can't let hunger stand in the way of a child’s education.
