"All I can say is: WHY?
If you had included us in the discussion and informed us that there was this kind of training, even if we were poor, I wouldn't have allowed my child to participate in it. All of my child's efforts and sacrifices weren't a joke—only for something like this to happen to him?
Until now, there's still no clear and proper answer as to why this happened. I hope you can answer all of our questions and give us the truth and explanation we've been waiting for so long.

Ateneo de Manila University shared the heartbreaking news on Monday: Rene Clert Baterbonia of the men’s basketball team passed away. The university announced that Rene died on June 8, 2026, following a drowning incident during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora. He was just beginning his journey with the Blue Eagles, full of dreams, discipline, and love for the game.
Rene was known not only for his dedication on the court but for the light he carried off it. Teammates remember him as humble, hardworking, and always willing to push himself for the team. He left his home and was sent off by his mother with tears at the airport, heading to Manila to chase his Ateneo dream. That same spirit of sacrifice and hope made him someone his coaches and fellow student-athletes believed in deeply.
The Ateneo community now mourns this tragic loss. The university extended its deepest condolences to Rene’s family, friends, teammates, coaches, and all who loved him. As we remember Rene, we hold his family close in prayer and honor the passion he brought to the Blue and White. May he rest in eternal peace, and may his dream continue to inspire those who remain on the court he loved.
