The UST Department of Biological Sciences joins the scientific community in mourning the passing of † 𝗗𝗿. 𝗞𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗘. 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿, a distinguished 𝒎𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒆 𝒃𝒊𝒐𝒍𝒐𝒈𝒊𝒔𝒕 and 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒔𝒄𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒔𝒕 whose lifelong dedication greatly advanced the understanding and protection of Philippine marine biodiversity.

Dr. Carpenter was the author of the breakthrough scientific paper which declared the Verde Island Passage as the “𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿” 𝗼𝗳 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗲-𝗳𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆. His scientific contributions significantly facilitated the continuous conservation of Philippine marine ecosystems.
