The Art of a Memory: Finding "Matched" 8 Years Later

They say "don't judge a book by its cover," but back in 2017, it was exactly the cover and the font of a book that etched itself into my mind.

I was in Grade 9 when I found this novel in our school library. I only read 15 pages before schoolwork took over, and eventually, I forgot the title entirely. But as an artist, the visual stayed with me. For 8 years, those first 15 pages replayed in my head like a movie. I’ve spent years scanning bookstores, searching for that specific aesthetic, not knowing the name of what I was looking for, just knowing I’d recognize it when I saw it.

Yesterday, after a pamper day with Mom, I walked into a bookstore and there it was: "Matched: by Ally Condie

I actually laughed at the "full circle" moment of it all. So much has happened in these 8 years, I’ve finished school, graduated college, and changed in so many ways. Being reunited with this book now gives me such a different feeling; it's like meeting an old friend after a lifetime apart.

I still don't know how the story goes—I only know those first 15 pages—but I am so incredibly excited to finally enter its world. To make it even better, I discovered it’s a trilogy! I bought all three immediately to add to the book collection I share with my sister. 📚

It’s a reminder of how a simple design and a few words can stay with us for nearly a decade. I’m so ready to finally finish what I started.

Note: I was so excited to finally find it that I didn't even know how the sequence of the trilogy goes! I realized I was holding them in the wrong order, but it's okay—I’ve got it sorted now. 😂 (It's Matched, Crossed, then Reached!)
