We must remember that love for country does not mean forgetting one’s self. Philippine healthcare workers are faced with two options once they enter the profession: to dedicate their lives for the country in return for meagre salaries and benefits, or to risk a career abroad, where much more respect, representation, and compensation is given to healthcare workers in other countries.

We cannot fault them, we should not fault them for choosing the latter option. Love for country cannot feed an empty stomach, and nationalism alone won’t be enough to secure their future or the future of their children. We need them more than they need us, and they need us to help fight for what they need: the same norms, standards, representation, and benefits found across the world.

With these thoughts in mind, is it better to be a HCW in the Philippines or abroad?
