The PEST D-Tech participated in the International Workshop and Symposium on Methodology for Citizen Science and the Society (IWSMCS 2025), held from November 24-28 at RET Amphitheater, Central Luzon State University.

Mr. Arvin Ian Yanguas represented the team for the symposium and presented the paper entitled “Monitoring of Fall Armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) in Corn Through Drone Technology”. This presentation highlighted the ongoing findings of the project that marks a significant step on the development of effective monitoring for pests and serve timely management approaches.

The event themed “A culminating event of the ITP Co-Ciphil: Co-creating environmental citizen science capacity in the Philippines” attended by co-researchers served as an avenue for the progressive scientific breakthroughs along with learnings from various resource persons.

The PEST D-Tech team is grateful for the opportunity to showcase what the team is working for, which not only focuses on the project itself but also serves the farmers, supports environment sustainability, and contributes to the advancement of the Philippine Agriculture.

The PEST D-Tech team, through the Institute for Climate Change and Environmental Management, hosted a training seminar on crop image annotation for third-year Crop Protection students specializing in Plant Pathology and Entomology. This training is essential for the machine learning model the team is currently developing.

The activity was very timely for two key reasons. First, the PEST D-Tech team is currently working on its final project deliverable. Second, the seminar directly benefited the students who are currently enrolled in the Precision and Digital Agriculture module of their Laboratory and Field Techniques in Crop Protection subject.

By conducting this seminar, the PEST D-Tech team successfully fulfilled one of the key objectives of the project's 6Ps components. Furthermore, the training was instrumental in helping young minds understand the processes involved in using advanced technologies for improving crop health.

The culmination of the activity was held with the awarding of a certificate of completion, which was attended by the team members, spearheaded by the Project Leader and Head of ICCEM, Dr. Gella Patria L. Abella.

The PEST D-Tech team, led by Dr. Gella Patria L. Abella, has successfully secured four copyright registrations. This milestone fulfills a key project deliverable and significantly boosts the university's intellectual property assets.

These remarkable works are a testament to the team's dedication to innovation. Their integration of drone technology and machine learning is pivotal in improving the early detection and management of insect pests and diseases affecting corn and onion crops.

This achievement, made possible with the expertise of the CLSU Intellectual Property Office under Dr. Emelie C. Ablaza, emphasizes the project’s dedication to improving the agriculture sector and expanding the university’s intellectual property portfolio.
