For those in foreign trade and logistics, Demurrage and Detention are always confusing. These two fees are easily mixed up, which may lead to unnecessary extra costs. Today, let's fully clarify them with a simple flow chart!

🔵 1. 𝑬𝒙𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒄𝒆𝒔𝒔 (Blue Section, Left to Right)

① Empty Container picked up: Collect empty container from yard and transport it to factory for loading

② Full Container inside terminal/depot: Deliver the loaded container back to terminal or depot

③ Full Container loaded on board vessel: The full container waits at terminal and then is loaded on ship to destination port

• Detention: Happens between Step ① & ②. Shipping company charges for overholding the container if you don’t return the full container in time after picking up the empty one

• Demurrage: Happens between Step ② & ③. Terminal charges for space occupation if the full container isn’t loaded on ship in time after arriving at terminal

🟠 2. 𝑰𝒎𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒄𝒆𝒔𝒔 (Orange Section, Left to Right)

① Full Container Discharge from vessel: Vessel arrives, and full container is unloaded from ship to terminal

② Full Container moved outside terminal/depot: Collect the full container from terminal and transport it to warehouse for unloading

③ Empty Container returned: Return the empty container to the yard or terminal designated by shipping company after unloading

• Demurrage: Happens between Step ① & ②. Terminal charges for space occupation if you don’t pick up the container in time after it’s unloaded to terminal

• Detention: Happens between Step ② & ③. Shipping company charges for overholding the container if you don’t return the empty container in time after picking up the full one

⭕️ 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐬

• Demurrage → Container overstays inside terminal or depot

• Detention → Container overstays outside after being moved out of terminal or depot

• Supplement: Storage (Cargo Storage Fee) → Charged for the overstay of cargo inside the container at terminal/yard, irrelevant to container occupation, which is the key difference from the above two fees
